September is just a couple days away so mentally you are already thinking cooler days are in the not-too-distant-future. Well that's not entirely true - September looks to be in the mid to latter 80's for most the month with many days still hitting 90 degrees.
With Summer still holding on that means you still need to be vigilant on making sure you are doing all you can to keep your A/C running effectively and efficiently and that's not always as easy as it seems.
That's because there are some common problems that hurt air conditioner performance that you should be aware of before they wind up affecting you as well. Foreknowledge may help you to avoid any of these from actually occurring or give you better insight in the event that something goes wrong.
Improper use can negate the effectiveness of any air conditioner. Before turning on your unit, you'll want to make sure that all the portals for cold air to escape are secured. If you have central air or any unit capable of cooling your entire home, ensure all windows are closed. Also make sure your return vent is clear of pet hair, dust and other possible blockages so the system can pull air in more efficiently. This holds true for making sure your air vents are not obstructed in any way so the cool air can be released into your home.
Also in the vain of human error is installation. Less qualified air conditioning contractors can make mistakes in installing units. For instance, ducts may not be sealed properly, resulting in a loss of air flow. Not maintaining the proper charge level of refrigerant will also cause diminished cooling capacity.
Internal problems may be harder to diagnose without the help of a professional. Electronic control can wear out if the switch is turned on and off frequently. Sensors can also malfunction, taking your unit with them. Clogged or obstructed drainage is also counter productive to the purpose of cooling your room or house.
