Check for these problems first when your HVAC system stops working

Technician Installing HVAC Unit

If you have central air, you how great it is not to worry about 90 degree weather outside because you're staying effortlessly cool inside. You'll also know how miserable you feel when this appliance stops working. Even so, sometimes you can easily fix the issue yourself. There are three usual suspects:

The furnace

The first thing you'll want to check is if the problem lies with the furnace fan, which blows the cold air into the duct system. With the thermostat turned all the way down on AC mode, check to see if the furnace fan starts up. If it doesn't - even after resetting the breaker on the main electrical panel - then you've likely found your problem. If it does, then you'll have to look elsewhere for a solution.

Contractor relay

The contractor relay is located outside in the condenser unit. If you remove the condenser's access cover you'll be able to identify the contractor relay by the wires sticking out of it - at least six. Its job is to switch power to the condenser fan and the compressor, similar to an alternator in a car. Though this part rarely fails, curious bugs can be electrocuted and stuck onto the wires. You can use compressed air to try to clear the wires of insects and debris. If this doesn't work, the contractors will have to be replaced.

The fan motor

The motor that runs the condenser fan may be at fault. If that's the case, there isn't much that can be done except to replace it. You can attempt this yourself as long as you take the proper precautions, but it's best if you call in a professional.
