Are tankless water heaters more energy efficient?

Tankless water heaters are a popular trend right now in home design. Many residents are calling up their local Virginia plumbing contractor to have a tankless system installed with the promise that it will deliver hot water quickly and that if you have a large family you'll never run out.

These systems use a heat exchanger to quickly heat up cold water. Rather than having a tank that is slowly warmed up by a natural gas flame, the tankless heater pulls in water and within a few seconds has it at the temperature you need to take a shower, wash dishes and run loads of laundry.

But the main benefit that these systems provide is that they're energy efficient. Because you're only heating up water when you need it, you end up saving money while also helping the environment. The Daily Green, an environmental news site, estimates that a tankless system will be 24 to 34 percent more efficient than a conventional water heater.

Families that would benefit most from a tankless system are those with high water usage. If you have many people every day taking showers and running loads of laundry, you've probably dealt frequently with the problem of running out of hot water. It can be frustrating, particularly if you're short on time and don't have the luxury of waiting for your shower to warm up again.

This is simply not a problem with a tankless system. If you're interested in switching over to one of these heaters, we recommend calling John C. Flood and having one of our DC plumbing experts come take a look at your existing system, to see what's necessary for making the transition.
