Do-it-yourself tricks for unclogging a drain

Plumber fixing kitchen sink

Nothing is more annoying for a homeowner than an issue that demands immediate attention. Having a clogged drain - whether it is in your bathtub or kitchen sink - is something that needs to be dealt with right away, or else it could cause major damage to your house. A clogged drain that goes on ignored can majorly impact your life because you completely lose the use of the sink, toilet or tub. Unclogging a drain is not ways easy, but there are several ways you can try to do it yourself before calling in a professional.

Here are a few tricks for having a drain unclogged:

  • Buy a drain snake: Having a drain snake handy in your house will be very useful for all minor plumbing situations. Drain snakes work best against small blocks, because they are able to push through and break up whatever is in the way easily. Drain snakes are most effective if a drain is being stopped up by accumulated hair.
  • Flush with boiling water: One of the easiest ways to get a drain unstuck is to pour a small amount of boiling water down it. This way is most effective against smaller blockages and might not be useful against grease or heavier items in the way. But if the source of the stoppage is light, boiling water will do the trick to flush it right out. This tip is best used for metal pipes, as it could damage other types of piping material.
  • Make your own drain cleaner: If you are certain that it is grease that is causing the clog, a homemade cleaner made of vinegar and baking soda will be most effective.
