How to properly care for your dishwasher

Dishwasher being loaded with plates

Most homeowners these days know how to own and operate a dishwasher. Even so, there are always ways we can improve upon how we use them. These kitchen appliances are designed to make our lives more convenient, but that does not mean they should not be properly cared for. Dishwashers are expensive, but they can last for many years as long as they are handled in a way that keeps them in top working shape. Caring for your dishwasher can be a very simple process.

Here are a few tips for maintaining your dishwasher:

  • Don't use dyes: Any detergents that have dyes listed in their ingredients need to be avoided. They will likely run and damage not only your dishwasher itself but all of your dishes and other kitchenware. Choose a detergent that does not contain any dyes.
  • Wash with citric acid: If you notice any brown stains in the interior of your dishwasher, the likely culprit is a buildup of calcium or iron. In order to counteract this, all you need to do is run an empty wash cycle with citric acid loaded in the detergent cup. After that, wash another empty cycle with just detergent and you will see the stains disappear.
  • Rinse tomato sauce: One of the worst ways you can stain the inside of your dishwasher is by loading pots or dishes that still have remnants of pasta sauce on them. Once you are done with your dinner, be sure to run the dishes under the sink for a few moments before loading them into the machine.
