Do It Yourself or Hire a Professional? A Guide to HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Projects

Home maintenance projects – especially those having to do with your HVAC, plumbing system, or electrical system – generally fall into two categories: do it yourself (DIY) and do it for me (DIFM). Since lockdown, DIY has become a way for homeowners to save money and maybe pick up a new skill. There’s no shortage of YouTube videos showing you how to fix a leak or change your HVAC filter. However, research suggests that many people are making the shift back to DIFM. More people want to invest in their homes, recognizing that some projects are best handled by professionals.

With over 120 years of experience in home services, John C. Flood breaks down the difference between DIY tasks versus when it’s time to call a pro.

HVAC Projects: What You Can Safely DIY vs. When to Call a Technician

When it comes to your home’s HVAC system, we understand that some fixes seem like straightforward DIY projects. But HVAC systems are complex, and mistakes can lead to further, more expensive damage or even safety hazards.

A good rule of thumb is that if the task involves basic maintenance without accessing electrical components or refrigerant lines, it’s usually safe to DIY. Anything more should be left to a licensed HVAC technician.

Safe DIY HVAC Tasks

  • Air filter replacement: Filters are typically located behind return vents or inside the furnace or air handler and are easily replaced yourself.
  • Thermostat battery replacement or reprogramming: Most thermostats use AA or AAA batteries, which can be easily replaced by removing the unit from its wall mount. Reprogramming settings, such as temperature schedules, can usually be done through the thermostat’s menu or a connected app.
  • Cleaning around outdoor AC units: You can (and should) clear leaves, grass clippings, and other debris from around the outdoor condenser unit.
  • Checking HVAC system power connections at the breaker: If your system won’t turn on, you can safely check the circuit breaker panel to make sure the HVAC breaker hasn’t tripped. Don’t open access panels or touch any internal wiring, though.

Plumbing Projects: When to Grab a Wrench and When to Call a Plumber

Tackling small plumbing tasks on your own can save time and money, but taking on more than you’re equipped for can lead to water damage, mold, or costly repairs.

Generally speaking, if the job involves surface-level fixes without cutting pipes or dealing with major leaks, you can usually DIY. For anything that affects your home’s water pressure, drainage, or internal plumbing system, it’s best to call a licensed plumber.

Safe DIY Plumbing Fixes

  • Unclogging a drain or toilet with a plunger or safe drain snake: A basic plunger or a hand-crank drain snake costs just a few dollars and can clear most clogs in minutes.
  • Replacing showerheads or faucet aerators: Swapping out a showerhead or screwing in a new aerator is as easy as twisting off the old one and hand-tightening the replacement.
  • Tightening loose fittings under the sink: A small leak from a loose pipe or fitting can often be fixed with just a wrench and a few turns.

Please note that improper DIY plumbing may void insurance in some cases and can cause costly damage if mishandled.

Electrical Projects: Why This Is One of the Riskiest Categories

Electrical work is one of the most dangerous types of home improvement projects. Improper handling can lead to shock, fire, or serious injury. Even small mistakes can cause long-term safety hazards or violate local building codes.

Only perform DIY electrical tasks that don’t require touching wires or opening electrical panels. For anything else, call a licensed electrician.

Lower-Risk DIY Electrical Tasks:

  • Replacing light bulbs or faceplates: This is as easy as unscrewing the old item and putting in a new one. No tools or electrical knowledge required.
  • Swapping out light fixtures: If you know how to turn off power at the breaker and can follow basic instructions, you can replace a light fixture. Most fixtures come with clear instructions and can be installed with just a screwdriver.
  • Installing plug-in surge protectors or smart plugs: These plug directly into existing outlets and provide extra safety or convenience without any wiring involved. They’re budget-friendly, widely available, and can be installed in under a minute.

Call a Pro For:

  • Anything involving your breaker box
  • Tripping breakers or electrical surges
  • Burning smells from outlets
  • Installing ceiling fans, outdoor lighting, or rewiring
  • Diagnosing shocks, buzzing sounds, or overheating fixtures

Note that even experienced DIYers can misjudge electrical risks. When in doubt, always consult a licensed electrician.

How to Decide: DIY or Hire a Professional?

Before starting any home project, weigh the cost of tools or materials against your safety, skill level, and the long-term impact. While DIY can be done for simple fixes, some jobs require expert knowledge, specialized tools, or legal permits to be done safely and correctly.

Ask yourself:

  • Is it safe and legal? Projects involving wiring, gas, or structural changes may require permits and inspections. Call a licensed professional.
  • Do I have the right tools and skills? Be honest about your experience and whether you’re equipped to handle the job from start to finish.
  • What could a mistake cost me later? A failed repair can lead to water damage, fire risk, or expensive system replacements.
  • Is this a recurring issue? If a problem keeps coming back, it’s likely a symptom of something deeper. Call a professional for an expert diagnosis.

Taking on certain small tasks can be safe and cost-effective. But knowing when to step back and call a licensed technician, plumber, or electrician can actually save you money in the long run and give you peace of mind that your home and family are protected.
