HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)
Your HVAC system’s job is to maintain a comfortable indoor air temperature. It’s often used all day, every day, especially in the Alexandria and Northern Virginia area, where we experience hot summers and cold winters.
Even the best, most sophisticated systems will develop problems under those circumstances—and that’s when it’s time to call in a professional service technician. We can diagnose and treat problems from the most common to the most complicated. Schedule service now.
Does your house feel warmer than it should even when the AC is working overtime? Are your electricity bills getting higher? Are you seeing condensation drips and leaks around your furnace? The problem could be low refrigerant. Refrigerant is the chemical that cools the air as it travels through your system.
You may also have a dirty or clogged air filter. If air can’t flow through the filter, the HVAC system will work harder but less efficiently. While you can check and replace your air filter yourself, low refrigerant isn’t a problem you can fix yourself—only a professional can find and repair the leak, top off the refrigerant levels, and make sure that everything is working properly once again.
For more information on the rising costs of refrigerant, read our blog post here.
What if your air conditioning isn’t working at all? First, check to see if the thermostat is turned on (check the batteries!), set to cool, and set below room temperature. Check all circuit breakers in the home and reset them if necessary. If your AC unit has a condensate pump, make sure it’s working—it may have a safety switch that shuts off the outdoor unit if the pump fails.
Ensure that there is no dirt, debris, or plants blocking the airflow of the condenser, and see if the condenser coil itself is clean. If these simple solutions don’t help, call John C. Flood’s friendly service department for diagnosis and assistance.
For a major electromechanical problem, our professional service technicians can diagnose and replace a failing condenser fan motor or evaporator blower motor, a burned-out capacitor, a blown fuse or breaker, a dirty or cracked evaporator coil, or a leaky cooling tower.
Don’t Forget: regular preventative maintenance like replacing filters and keeping outdoor units clean and clear will prolong the life of your HVAC system and decrease both operating and repair costs. Sign up for our service partner programs.
